Welcome to the BiG Ministry Frequently Asked Questions page. We know that choosing to get involved in a mentoring program—whether as a parent, mentor, church, or supporter—comes with important questions, and we are committed to transparency, safety, and clarity every step of the way. This page is designed to provide helpful answers about who we are, what we believe, and how BiG Ministry operates. If you have additional questions that are not answered here or elsewhere on our website, please feel free to contact BiG Ministry at info@bigministry.org or call or text 918-236-8364. We would be honored to connect with you.

How are mentors matched with children?

We take the pairing process very seriously. Matches are based on:

  • Personality assessments

  • Shared interests

  • Availability and consistency

  • Prayerful consideration by leadership

Our goal is to create healthy, encouraging, and lasting mentor-mentee relationships.

Can my child participate if our family is not part of a church?

Yes. While we partner closely with churches, church membership is not required for a child to participate. We welcome families who are open to faith-based mentoring and spiritual encouragement.

What do mentors and mentees do together?

Mentors communicate with their mentee 3xs (or more) a week through a paid, secure and monitored app. Once (or more) a month, each mentor has an in person outing with their mentee that can be as low as 1-2 hrs (or more). Activities may include:

  • Talking through life and faith

  • Doing homework or reading Scripture

  • Playing games or doing activities in public settings

  • Participating in BiG Ministry group events

Every interaction is designed to build trust, character, and spiritual growth.

How do parents stay informed?

Parents and guardians receive:

  • Regular communication

  • Event updates

  • Clear expectations and policies

  • Opportunities to provide feedback

We believe mentoring works best when parents, mentors, and ministry leaders are working together.

Does BiG Ministry teach faith and the Bible?

Yes. BiG Ministry is unapologetically Christian and Bible-based. Mentors are encouraged to:

  • Share Scripture

  • Pray with and for their mentee

  • Point children to Jesus through words and example

However, mentors are trained to do this with wisdom, kindness, and respect.

We're not here to teach theology or doctrine. WE're here to keep the main thing, the main thing. JOHN 3:16.

Is BiG Ministry a licensed counseling or therapy service?

No. BiG Ministry provides mentoring, not professional counseling or therapy. Mentors are trained to encourage, listen, and point children toward biblical truth and healthy choices, but they do not provide clinical, medical, or psychological services. When needed, families are encouraged to seek appropriate professional support.

What is the time commitment for mentors?

BiG Mentors average about 4-5 hrs a month in communicating and meeting with their mentee in a one year commitment.

Consistency is essential, as stable relationships help children feel valued, supported, and secure. Mentors also participate in occasional trainings and group events throughout the year.

What is BiG Ministry’s policy on discipline and behavior correction?

BiG Mentors are never responsible for disciplining a child. Discipline remains the role of the parent or guardian. Mentors are trained to model Christlike behavior, encourage positive choices, and redirect conversations or activities when needed. Any ongoing behavioral concerns are communicated directly to BiG Ministry leadership and the child’s parent or guardian to ensure appropriate support and care.

What is BiG Ministry?

BiG Ministry is a faith-based mentoring organization that partners with local churches to connect caring, trained adult mentors with children who would benefit from a positive, godly role model. Our mission is to help children grow in character, confidence, and faith through consistent, Christ-centered relationships.

How much does BiG Ministry cost?

BiG Ministry is 100% free for children and families. Our ministry is supported by generous donors, churches, and community partners who believe in the power of mentorship.

Is BiG Ministry affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters?

No. While BiG Ministry shares a similar mentoring concept, we are a separate, faith-based nonprofit organization rooted in biblical principles and serving the local church and their communities.

How are mentors selected and approved?

Every BiG Mentor completes a thorough application process, which includes:

  • A detailed written application

  • A comprehensive background check

  • Personal references

  • An interview via Zoom or Google Meet

  • Required training and orientation

No mentor is paired with a child until every step is fully completed and approved.

Who does BiG Ministry serve?

We currently serve children in 3rd–8th grade and adult mentors (18+) from the local church and community who are committed to living out their faith and investing in the next generation.

How does BiG Ministry ensure child safety?

Child safety is our top priority. We maintain:

  • Zero-tolerance policies for misconduct

  • Clear mentor boundaries and guidelines

  • Ongoing communication with parents/guardians

  • Required training for all mentors

  • Oversight from ministry leadership

Mentors are never left unaccountable and are expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity and care.
